Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
