Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
