Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Music Generations

Marking 20 years since Guitar Hero first launched across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that someone who has nailed the epic lengthy instrumental break before a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues moving along the display in time with the music. Each riff mimicked particular chords, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

Harmonix had already experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a significant influence for many musicians included, introducing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the cost was so high,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band the Answer had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series revived older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, new demographic. Typically such music was considered outdated material, but then when it was included in the game and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's debut album remained not available in the US, so the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Music's biggest acts soon took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band more money compared to their records. It moved well over half a million units in its first week, and demand for their songs saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed fanaticism within the community. Recently, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. The song is difficult even in expert mode, let alone performed at double speed and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” says musician the artist.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it threatened to overshadow all other the band has done. Recently, the track featured in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Plastic Guitar

The best marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators believed there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

Most installments were released over a mere five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community active, with expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles could be similar to sports games where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to persist with new generations.”
