Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
