The moment is optimal to alter Man Utd's system - the manager insists.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team players to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that altering Manchester United's formation due to public noise would have signaled "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his trademark back three formation with wing-backs and instead field an standard back four with two holding midfielders.

He himself conceded this at times transformed into a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his side held on for a win - securing only their second-ever shutout of the season.

Despite he once memorably stated that not even the highest authority could force him to change his system, Amorim asserts the option to experiment with varied setups has remained part of his plan.

However, he clarifies he could solely make the switch when his team were faring sufficiently well - lest it would seem as if he was bowing to outside criticism.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I understood maybe I don't have the squad to play well in that formation, but it was the beginning of a journey," he said.

"Our aim was to build an philosophy. Today is a distinct time. We lack a lot of players, and we need adapt, so they see why we are making changes.

"The change isn't because of the demands of you guys, or the faithful.

"Whenever media discuss altering the formation repeatedly, I can't make a change because the players will think I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the end for the manager.

"When we are playing well in our preferred setup, that is the moment to change.

"We are going to develop into a more complete team because when all the personnel are available, we are not intending to use three defenders all the time."

Injury Crisis Loom Large

With only two wins in their last eight outings before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been in good form.

He is, however, managing with a depleted squad, with seven first-team stars already unavailable for the upcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will grow if midfielder Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, even though he is reportedly pressing his manager to let him to make a comeback following his muscle injury.

"Bruno is already telling me he has to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No way. You can write that."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be heavily involved, as whereas most injured players view matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to continue offering guidance.

"He is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He must not be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That's why he's the captain.

"There are bad things sometimes - the way he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. After he finishes treatment, he heads to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things you don't see.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Injured Players

While the precise date for the captain's comeback - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, before the conclusion of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
