Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
